Your Presence in the Present

If time is linear, why have you chosen to live in the past?

If you’re like the rest of us, you promised to be brand new in 2017. You set goals and promised yourself this year was your year. So what’s wrong? Why are you feeling low and uninspired? Here’s a hint: It’s far easier to allow our old ways of thinking to run the show than to have faith and actively manage our thoughts. The old ways of thinking don’t bring us any good, but it’s familiar. We have faith, but untangling ourselves from old loops can be very challenging.

When we’re afraid of facing current challenges or anxious about the future, it’s easy to look to the past for answers and comfort. Without realizing it, you may already be setting limitations on what you can achieve by using the past as a barometer for your future success. If you’re stuck in the past, you’re probably not making good use of the present. We can’t stop old memories from showing up, but we can challenge them; we can make them less powerful by acknowledging what we’ve lived, and deciding to live new experiences in the present moment, instead of just reliving the past.

How do you do that? Be aware of your thoughts, and every time you catch yourself in an old memory or thought, ask yourself, “Why do I choose to exist here?” Your most powerful moment is this one.
